Friday Five with Five Tips For Engaging Your Teams!
1. Keep it fun.
- Taco Tuesdays, Casual Fridays and Happy Hours don’t have to be a thing of the past. But perhaps you start Formal Fridays. Have everyone dress to the nines and share pictures or have a video chat. It is prom season after all. Keep Taco Tuesdays and have a Zoom or video-based team lunch. Right now, when your team is feeling the most disconnected or isolated, you can engage them in the simplest of ways.
2. Keep it regular.
- Whatever you do, try to do it regularly. Schedule standing weekly one on ones in addition to the fun ones. But, always keep the meetings scheduled. This should be a time for everyone to share what they are working on and to identify any issues they are having. In these tough times, people need reassurance and support. Something they can count on. Let it be you!
3. Keep it simple.
- Don’t feel like you need to create a deck for every meeting. Don’t overthink the agenda. Sometimes it is enough to simply schedule a meeting to connect. Some companies are scheduling weekly round ups to give everyone an opportunity to talk about the highlight of their week – business or personal. This can be done in 30 minutes or less.
4. Keep it collaborative.
- Solicit ideas from your teams. You are not the only one who must come up with creative ideas. Ask your teams what they think would be a fun way to keep everyone engaged on a regular basis. Lean on their creativity. Collaborative ideas often gain more support and momentum than ideas developed in isolation.
5. Keep it open.
- Make sure your managers are communicating to their teams that we are all in this together. All feedback is welcome and every idea will be considered. Reinforce that you are listening. Share company updates openly. Your team members will take cues from you. If they see you sharing openly, they will do the same.
