This past year has undoubtedly been an unexpected way to kick off the new decade. Amidst everything that made 2020 such an unprecedented year, we certainly learned a lot. Many aspects of our lives and businesses changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but we feel stronger because of it! After living through our “new normal “ for nearly a year, it’s the perfect time to look back on our experiences to distill critical lessons that we can take with us as we move into 2021.

Strong Communication is Key

Communication within a business is a fundamental requirement for success. In 2020, we learned that communicating isn’t always easy in a dynamic work environment that saw employees working at their primary work location, home and in the field. Our best advice for the year ahead is to have a plan and platform in place that allows your team to stay in touch in real time and deliver essential updates/feedback.

Letting Go of Yesteryear’s Performance Management

Holding employee assessments quarterly or yearly was the standard in virtually every industry for many years. We believe that this is an outdated way to optimize performance management, and the varying work conditions of this past year proved it. While delivering continuous feedback to remote employees would’ve been impossible in the past, modern tools have made it a breeze. If an employee could benefit from praise, coaching or even disciplinary actions, they should be made aware of that right in that moment, not months down the line after the fact.

We’re All in This Together

We will be the first to admit that 2020 wasn’t always the most comfortable year personally or professionally. With less face-to-face time with our teams than usual throughout the year, we had to find a new means of staying connected and engaged. Our emphasis on fostering an environment where employees can easily support each other and spread positivity regardless of their working location is something that will stay with us through 2021 and beyond. As the sun sets on 2020, we look forward to the bright tomorrow that 2021 will bring.
