Manager as Coach

March 14, 2023

One of the many benefits of Truvelop is the messaging our Customer Success team sends to leaders and managers on the 1st and 15th of every month. Through Truvelop Tips, we share best practices, proactive recommendations, and quicks tips with end users on various topics. Here is an excerpt from the most recent Truvelop Tip: Manager as Coach.

As a coach, you bring your team together under your organization’s mission, vision, and culture.  Whether you have one direct report or 20, it’s important to define their role and how they are making an impact.  McKinsey recently found that 70 percent of employees said their sense of purpose is defined by their work. So, as a coach and leader, you play an important part in helping your employees find their purpose and live it.  Ready to get started?

Build a Strong Foundation: The first piece of the engagement puzzle is to start with a strong foundation. Does your team understand their role responsibilities? Is there anything standing in the way of their success? Even if your team member isn’t struggling, the reflection questions for C-Players can be great for opening a conversation around role understanding and purpose.

Proactive Check-Ins: Knowing where your team stands today, what they’re working on, what they’re doing well, and where they need support is crucial in proactively coaching their development. The Quick Connect and Regular Check-In guides from our Coaching Culture worksheets is a good place to start a meaningful conversation.

Define a Path Forward: Part of knowing one’s purpose is also knowing what you’re working towards.  Does this employee want to grow with the company? Do they have any personal or professional goals? Do you see them as a future leader? If you haven’t already, have an Individual Development Planning session with this team member to show your investment in their future.

As a coach, you can lead and guide your team’s development. Through continuous support and proactive communication, you can stay ahead of the curve and keep your team engaged, even when challenges come their way.
